The Ancient Egyptians immortalized these little "sacred" insects. This little black beauty is just one adorable example of this family of beetles - Scarabaeidae.

BTW, did you know there's something amiss in the "click to enlarge" feature? It's a Blogger Known Issue. There's a way you can fix it, but it's kind of a pain.

Beetle was around .75" and very tame. A real cutie.
I too like the scarab family. Especially the Rainbow Scarabs- a truly magical looking beetle. It is easy to see why the Egyptians idolized these insects.
This summer I was fortunate enough to see a Golden Tortise Beetle- it really looked as if it were plated in gold. (http://natureatcloserange.blogspot.com/2007/10/gold-bug-in-alabama.html)
