Sunday

I wonder if this little fellow would appreciate being on Flickr Explore ;0)

I doubt that he would even care.
He's too self-absorbed these days just
pigging out on Hickory nuts ;0)

The squirrels are going literally nuts over the Hickory Tree beside the house. Day and night I hear the nuts falling to the ground. All day long the rodents feast on them..... and they are getting quite chubby. I took this young fellow's image through the window yesterday morning.

Friday

It's Hot, I'm Tired, I'm Hungry..... just leave me be! NOT happy!

Sulking Squirrel
Someone's not in the mood for pictures this day. His time at the bird feeder was abruptly interrupted for a frivolous human pastime..... namely backyard nature photography ;0)

Thursday

Waiting for "permission" to return to the bird feeder

It wasn't me..... promise!
I've been here the whole time.

The bird feeder is on the other side of this tree. NOT innocent. Sibling to the "partner in crime" is shown below resting on the fence.

As always..... permission is granted
whenever I'm not in plain sight!

Saturday

Freeze action learning with a little help from Mother Squirrel ;0)

I just brought home my first macro lens.....
Yeaaaaaa!
I chose the Sigma 150 and already I can see quite an improvement over the kit lens that came with my digital EOS camera - Canon Rebel XT. Action shots have been a challenge for me as am just learning but with Mommy Gray Squirrel always hopping and jumping about in the backyard I will certainly get plenty of practice shots. Thanks Mom. Here the lens is not set to macro. The shutter speed notably surpasses what I was using.
I am following up verbal gratuity for my unknowing subject with more substantial rewards of peanuts, corn cobs and whatever else her little heart desires. The bird feeder will no longer be her only obsession. A trip to the feed store is on my list! Ok.... Daddy Squirrel can partake too.

Tuesday

Squirrels have been busy lining their winter homes by stripping bark from this Eastern Red Cedar - Juniperus virginiana

My Dad always brought home a small Red Cedar to use as our Christmas tree each year. It smelled wonderful but placing ornaments proved a bit painful on little hands ;0)
More information about this resilient tree is available here at this Virginia Tech - Department of Forestry site: http://www.fw.vt.edu/dendro/dendrology/syllabus/factsheet.cfm?ID=97

Wednesday

RECYCLE THAT OLD MAILBOX - Cedar post and all - Shall it be a Birdhouse or Squirrel Feeder?

White-breasted Nuthatch agrees.....

recycling an old mailbox is a good thing ;0)

Yep..... this mailbox has "Gone to the Squirrels."

Remnants of Hickory nuts lay scattered inside the box while an abandoned Wren nest is left intact. Birds often roost in old nests on cold winter days, cozy and protected from the elements. Since the mailbox is simply resting between two Holly trees, it can easily be relocated elsewhere if desired.

Last summer Wrens raised a brood here. The nest was tightly constructed against the back of the box. If neighboring cats had not been afraid to enter the yard (where my dogs rule) I would have inserted a wooden front, complete with entrance hole to make the birds safe and secure. I still may do that as the squirrels have decided to use it for a dining area this fall, wouldn't want them to disturb nesting Wrens next spring ;0)

Update from 2010: I put a front on the mailbox and a pair of Nuthatches have claimed it as theirs, as evident in the first image. Here's the link to read about the Nuthatchs nesting in the mailbox: http://carolynhietalanatureartpaintings.blogspot.com/2010/04/white-breasted-nuthatch-agrees.html
Conserve & Recycle - Recycling makes good sense so use your creativity and find new uses for old things. Your backyard wildlife will certainly appreciate your efforts!

Freeze! Caught by surprise in gazebo shadows - I can see the wheels turning over & over..... what to do, what to do?

At least it's not..... In The Center Of The Road!
