Honeybee On Wild Aster - Miniature Acrylic Painting On Silk Canvas - 3"x3" - FRAMED

This small nature art was painted by me for the upcoming ThinkSmall5 exhibition taking place here in Richmond, Virginia. The exhibit runs from November 6, through December 20, 2009.
Purchase from hundreds of works by local, national, and international artists at the 5th Biennial International Miniature Invitational, a special fundraising event for Artspace and art6 galleries.
The outside frame measurement of the above painting is 7.75 x 7.75 inches. The work is matted and protected under glass. I took the sipping insect reference image in October 2008 in my Chesterfield County yard ;0)

Once again this Graham Thomas English Rose bows in Reverance to Fall & In Memory of Mom

Mom's Yellow Rose and.....

an Oil Painting of.....

.....my Mother's rose resting in a Hall's Jewel Tea teacup & saucer (Autumn Leaf pattern..... how appropriate!) For reference I took a photograph of her rose that was backlit with brilliant afternoon sunshine. The result was a rose that literally glowed with amazing yellows..... I love it when that happens ;0) I just had to paint it in oils and will paint this rose again many times over.
See the step-by-step painting progression here:

The Summer before she was abruptly taken from this world, I took Mom to The Great Big Greenhouse here in Richmond to purchase her favorite flower..... the Rose! Along with some other rose bushes, this was one of her choices to bring home to her garden. She passed in the Fall so naturally when these beautiful yellow blossoms return for their second bloom in Autumn each year..... I think of her.

"Moth Pupa" Oil Painting framed to benefit local Wildlife Rehabbers ARK / SOLD via silent auction at Rockwood Park in Chesterfield, Virginia

Entomologists and Nature Lovers will adore this painting! It is very detailed and painted directly from collected leaves, rocks, moss, walnut, sticks, lichen, log and let's not forget the pupa! All sat on my palette while being painted. (The pupa kept annoying me by moving though) It was actually quite fun to wander through the woods to locate each and every object.....except the pupa which can be blamed for starting the whole project.

See the Step - by - Step progression of this painting here: http://paintingadaycarolynhietala.blogspot.com/2007/06/moth-pupa-oil-painting-step-by-step.html

UPDATE: SOLD

This painting began my Nature Art Paintings series. More are being created to be shown in this blog. Hope you enjoy them as much as I have in creating them!

Thanks for your interest.

Catbird Kitten Photograph! Look what the Cat... no Bird dragged in. Fishworm! Gourmet meal. Original Photo. Nature Art by Carolyn Hietala

An authentic photograph negative of a real "Cat"bird?
NOT! But just imagine.... that would be something wouldn't it? Cat's with wings?!
This was a fun "take-off" on one of my fantasy polymer clay sculptures.

With assistance from a local entomologist we are 99% certain the subject of my oil painting is a Catalpa Sphinx Moth pupa! Will paint the moth too.

It has been almost a year since I collected this pupa to use in one of my paintings.

Yes it is still alive and moving......amazing!

Since I moved it indoors just before winter of 2005 it didn't receive the drop in temperature necessary to trigger it's emergence in spring.

Am so sorry I didn't find that out sooner as I have impatiently been waiting to paint the moth!

Now it will go into the refrigerator for two weeks and if all goes well....... immortalized in oil paint on canvas soon!

Keep your fingers crossed that all goes well. I surely hope it is able to emerge.
